Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of the post-fascist Brothers of Italy party, is set to introduce significant changes to immigration laws and visa policies. She will govern as part of a coalition with the populist League party and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia. These proposed changes have sparked widespread discussion, especially among countries that have immigration agreements with Italy.
As news of possible reforms continues to circulate, many people are eagerly awaiting updates on when immigration pathways may reopen. Reports suggest the introduction of a new visa category, which would fall under the authority of Italy’s Ministry of the Interior. While official details are still limited, the Prime Minister has addressed the proposed direction of these changes.

In line with her election promises, Prime Minister Meloni’s government intends to adopt a strict stance on illegal immigration. Emphasizing legal entry routes, she stated that, like any responsible nation, Italy does not allow illegal entry. Instead, migrants must enter the country through legal channels, particularly under the “decreto flussi” system.
Meloni also said, “There is no doubt that we have to open immigration, but we want anyone who comes under immigration in Italy to be already trained.” Some training centres are said to be established where Italy has an agreement to bring people through immigration. Here, full training will also be provided. The agreement with Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and other African countries means training centres will be built in these countries.

Every year, a fixed quota is reserved for individuals from third-world countries. Last year, this quote was released for around 45000 applicants. The Italian government has started releasing information on the work visa applications for 2023, which are expected to open in December. This year, the expected number of applications is over 80,000. Under the Decreto Flussi program, individuals who come from weak academic histories, lack English proficiency, or have insufficient financial capability to apply for higher education in Italy can also get a work visa to work in Italy.
Before coming to Italy, anyone should know what kind of work they are supposed to do. Specialised training will be provided for this, along with how the work will be done and the normal work rules in Italy. Furthermore, some basic training in the Italian language might also be provided. The Meloni government might introduce a new law keeping these things in mind. Italian analysts are saying that this, brought upon by the Meloni government, will not apply to the immigration opening this year. This will apply when immigration applications open this year, around December or January.
